Maddie had a little snafu! She was visiting the museum in Angra with some friends where she was admiring the beautiful ceilings while walking forward... right off a really high platform.
She fell down and heard a snap sound which led to a great deal of pain! After a quick hospital visit, she was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and needs to use crutches for the next two weeks. Thankfully our friends let us stay in their house since she is unable to climb the latter.

Have you ever noticed that grocery stores sell generalized foods? They have the ability to sum up an entire culture, sometimes many cultures, and put a label on it. Italian Spice Asian Spice Russian Dressing French Dressing What about other countries, do you think they have an “Américan thing?” They do! And it’s a cookie.
Honestly, they looked delicious so I bought them. Big chocolate chip cookies! I think they did a good job of summarizing America. In Serreta, Terciera, Azores, Portugal, there is a massive staircase that takes you down to a little platform overlooking a giant cliff. Far below you are powerful breaking waves that crest above the abysmal depths of the Atlantic Ocean.
Why is this spot a local favorite? Fishing. I have no idea how the fish doesn’t fling itself off the hook on that huge climb it has to make to reach the clutches of the fisherman, but they all had buckets full of fish! Why do we travel on boats? Well that is an easy question!
To get to our adventures!! On the south side of Terciera, Azores, Portugal are these natural pools that are filled by massive waves and then warmed by the sun. Off in the distance is a massive mountain that looks like it was ripped apart. The locals call it Goat Island but the tourists are told the island’s name is Split Rock! Having traveled to the beautiful Azores at the end of the Atlantic crossing season (West To East) we decided to stay here through the winter.
Their winters are not so much cold as they are rainy, and the rain then never dries until the spring. Long before then, our home has become plagued with mold! We have taken the liberty of exterminating the mold that has tried to live amongst us. Maddie soaked the every surface we found mold to be living on in white vinegar and let it sit for 1 hour. Then she scrubbed it clean and wiped away any trace remnants of our unwanted boat-mate. Does vinegar kill mold? We don’t know for sure, but enough websites said it would, so why not give the boat a great cleaning anyways! When having an adventure on a boat, you also want to be comfortable! Outside is in the 50s F and rainy. That means that the inside would be wet and cold as well.
The diesel fireplace dries out the boat and warms it up all at the same time. Suddenly, the inside of the boat is a toasty 70F and dry as a bone. This makes our refit project site feel more like a home! The local government has issued a wind warning for the island Terceira, in the Azores. We are on the hard so all this means is a ton of wind noise in the rigging and plenty of ventilation through the hatches.
My adventure has been standing in the bilge of the shower while applying fairing compound to the surface. I have spent the past two weeks laminating the shower floor and making it flow into the head. I do this not because I enjoy playing statue in a small enclosed room while the weather varies outside, but because I want to get back to the adventure! Hello everyone,
I am taking over for Johnny. My goal is to keep his dream going, making it easy to find information about boats and cruising at any stage in your boating life. Boats are great vessels for adventure and I want to keep sharing these adventures on boats. |
